China Abstract The paper is devoted to studying a viscous thin-film equation with a singular diffusion term and the periodic boundary conditions in multidimensional space, which has a lot of applications in fluids theory such as draining of foams and the movement of contact lenses. In order to obtain the necessary uniform estimates and overcome the difficulty of a singular diffusion term, the entropy functional method is used. Finally, the existence of nonnegative weak solutions is obtained by some compactness arguments.

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane

Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...

Numerical Methods for Fourth Order Nonlinear Degenerate Diffusion Problems

Numerical schemes are presented for a class of fourth order diffusion problems. These problems arise in lubrication theory for thin films of viscous fluids on surfaces. The equations being in general fourth order degenerate parabolic, additional singular terms of second order may occur to model effects of gravity, molecular interactions or thermocapillarity. Furthermore, we incorporate nonlinea...

On Steady States of Van Der Waals Force Driven Thin Film Equations

Let Ω ⊂ R , N ≥ 2 be a bounded smooth domain and α > 1. We are interested in the singular elliptic equation △h = 1 α h − p in Ω with Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper, we gave a complete description of all continuous radially symmetric solutions. In particular, we constructed nontrivial smooth solutions as well as rupture solutions. Here a continuous solution is said to be a rupture so...

Buoyant Instability of a Viscous Film over a Passive Fluid

In certain geophysical contexts such as lava lakes and mantle convection, a cold, viscous boundary layer forms over a deep pool. The following model problem investigates the buoyant instability of the layer. Beneath a shear-free horizontal boundary, a thin layer (thickness d1) of very viscous fluid overlies a deep layer of less dense, much less viscous fluid; inertia and surface tension are neg...

The Lubrication Approximation for Thin Viscous Films: the Moving Contact Line with a `porous Media' Cut off of Van Der Waals Interactions

We consider the effect of a second order ‘porous media’ [25] term on the evolution of weak solutions of the fourth order degenerate diffusion equation (1) ht = −∇ · (h∇∆h −∇h) in one space dimension. The equation without the second order term is derived from a ‘lubrication approximation’ and models surface tension dominated motion of thin viscous films and spreading droplets [18]. Here h(x, t) ...
